How to Tame A Busy Toddler

Hello All,

Sleeping toddler

This is my first installment of posts regarding busy toddler boys.

For all you moms, dads, aunts, uncles, etc. who have daily contact or frequent contact with busy toddler boys, you may be wondering, “why can’t this busy toddler sit down?!”, and “what can I do to slow this busy toddler down?”

Well, rest assured…I have the answer, at least temporarily!

As a mother to a three year old busy toddler, I don’t know how many times I scream, “No! do not jump off of the furniture!”, or, “Sit down and don’t touch that!“ which I must say  are phrases I scream in vain, not to mention the wasted breath and headache!

I had to figure out a way to stop him from terrorizing my house sun-up to sun-down. Mainly because I did not want him to get injured, and of course because he was breaking things in the process!

What I realized was he had too much “bottled energy”. So, I decided to take action.

I found that setting aside a good portion of my day to just be about my busy toddler did wonders.

During my 5 hours of time that I set only for him, these are the activities we did (and still do, starting in the morning and in order):

1. Breakfast – anything of his choice except for sugary foods

2. ABC’s, numbers, colors, shapes, ect. as usual

3. Play time – I prefer the neighborhood park. During this time, my busy toddler is able to jump off anything appropriate at the park. He can run, run, run, run, ride his bike and run some more. I will usually spend about 3 hours at the park.

4. Back home – final result is sleepy time! (and, he usually sleeps for about 3-4 hours!)

Once my busy toddler is asleep, I am able to relax and get some work done for the next couple of hours.

I don’t have to worry about him jumping off of my furniture or terrorizing my house.

I don’t have to scream at him in vain, but the key is time…a lot of the time, these busy toddlers are competing for your time mom.

So, why not indulge your busy toddler? What could it possibly hurt? At least now, you create a window of relaxation and work time…wonderful!

So, what are you waiting for? Get that busy toddler on a schedule and make it about him, at least for a couple of hours!

See ya soon!
